Why We Built India’s 1st Clean Home Fragrance Brand

People often ask me, “why camphor? Why air fresheners? Why would someone walk away from a career in the media to sell room fresheners?”

And honestly, I get it. On paper, it doesn't make a lot of sense. But when you understand the why, I think it starts to make every bit of sense in the world.

The Question No One Was Asking About Home Fragrance

We live in an era of awareness. We read food labels. We research skincare ingredients. We spend time choosing what we eat, what we apply on our skin, what we bring into our homes as furniture or cookware.

But the fragrance of our spaces? That's almost always an afterthought.

Think about it. The air freshener sitting on your shelf. The camphor tablet sitting in your pooja ghar. The car freshener dangling from your rearview mirror. The closet freshener folded into your wardrobe. These are products you use around twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. You breathe them in while you sleep. While your children play. While your pets eat. While you cook. While you pray.

And yet, most of us have absolutely no idea what's in them.

Most home fragrance brands don't disclose their full ingredient lists. Many use phthalates, formaldehyde-releasing compounds, aerosol propellants, and other chemicals that have no business being in the air you breathe every day. The traditional naphthalene ball in every Indian cupboard? A known toxin. The aerosol room spray we reach for instinctively? Often packed with ingredients that no one has ever bothered to read.

I noticed this, and I couldn't un-notice it.

The Turning Point

After over 15 years of my corporate career, I was at a point in my life where I felt a certain restlessness. I was grateful for every bit of the life and career I had built. But I felt a pull toward something that felt more personal, more purposeful.

Around that time, I enrolled in a certification programme in skincare, haircare, and aromatherapy formulation. That decision changed everything.

When you become a certified formulator, you start looking at everyday products very differently. You begin to understand what goes into them, what could go into them, and more importantly, what shouldn't. You start reading ingredient lists with a completely different eye. And once you do that, you can't stop.

I began looking at the home fragrance products on my own shelves and realised how little I, a reasonably informed person, knew about what I was bringing into my home. Ingredients were hidden behind vague terms. Formulations were never disclosed. And this was the norm across brands and price points.

That's when the question hit me clearly: Does a clean home fragrance brand even exist in India?

It didn't.

Why I Decided to Build a Clean Home Fragrance Brand

The name Nytarra comes from the Sanskrit word नितारा, which means having deep roots. That's exactly what I wanted to build, something rooted. Rooted in honesty, in intention, and in care.

I founded Nytarra because I wanted to create something I couldn't find: clean, everyday home fragrances that are thoughtfully formulated and completely transparent about what goes inside them.

I want to be very clear about what "clean" means for us, because the word gets misused a lot.

Nytarra is not chemical-free. Everything, including water, is a chemical. We don't hide behind those claims.

What we are is this: phthalate-free, formaldehyde-free, aerosol-free, paraben-free. We are IFRA-compliant, which means our fragrance formulations meet international safety standards. It’s a benchmark that most Indian home fragrance brands simply don't meet. We use plant-based ingredients wherever possible, make our products in small batches, always fresh, and we publish our ingredient lists openly, something that's genuinely rare in this category.

We also don't demonise ingredients or synthetic fragrances as a category. Science has given us incredible tools. The question is whether those tools are being used responsibly and transparently. At Nytarra, we believe they should be.

Products Built for Modern Indian Homes

Our product range is built around the everyday fragrance moments of an Indian home.

Mystical Camphor: reimagined pure camphor free from the toxic naphthalene that most people don't realise is harmful. Camphor has been part of Indian homes and rituals for centuries. We wanted to honour that tradition while making it safer for modern families.

Room Fresheners, Car Fresheners, Bathroom Fresheners, Closet Fresheners: products that live in every corner of your home and your car, formulated without hidden bases, without aerosol propellants, and with full transparency about what goes inside.

Every product is freshly made, in small batches, with care. Because that's the only way we know how to do it.

Building Nytarra: A Brand Still in the Making

Nytarra is a brand that is still learning, every single day. We are still growing, still improving, still going back to the drawing board when something can be done better. We've had the honour of appearing on Shark Tank India and being heard by some of the sharpest minds in business. We've had customers write to us saying our products made their home feel calming and clean. We've seen women who make our products grow in skill, in confidence, in independence, and that, honestly, fills me with more pride than any metric ever could.

Building something meaningful takes time. Building trust takes even longer. But every small batch we make, every ingredient we disclose, every customer who reads our label and feels seen, that's the brand I wanted to build.

And while we still have a long way to go, we remain deeply committed to building thoughtfully, transparently, and with intention. Because for us, home fragrance was never just about making spaces smell good. It was about creating products people can truly feel comfortable bringing into their everyday lives.
