Have you ever noticed that your body seems to smell different at different times? Maybe your body odour became stronger during your teenage years. Maybe you notice a difference when you are stressed. Or perhaps your usual scent seems to change during certain hormonal changes. There is a reason for this. Your natural body scent is influenced by sweat, skin oils, bacteria, genetics, temperature and even what is happening inside your body. Hormones are one of those influences. But there is an important detail: your hormones do not simply have a smell of their own. Instead, they can change how your sweat and oil glands work, which can change what is available on your skin for bacteria to break down into odorous compounds. Let's look at what is actually happening. Your Body Odour Isn't Just Sweat We often say that sweat causes body odour, but it is a little more complicated than that. Most of the sweat produced by eccrine glands is mainly water and salts. On its own, it usually has very little smell. Another type of gland, called the apocrine gland, produces a thicker secretion containing proteins, lipids and other substances. These glands are particularly important in areas such as the underarms. When these substances reach the skin, bacteria break some of them down into smaller, volatile molecules. Why Does Body Odour Change During Puberty? Puberty is probably the clearest example of hormones changing body scent. Children generally do not have the same characteristic underarm odour as adults. During puberty, hormonal changes activate the adrenal and reproductive hormone systems, and the apocrine and sebaceous glands develop and become more active. This is why puberty is associated with adult-type body odour, oilier skin and other changes such as underarm and pubic hair. So when a teenager suddenly starts smelling different, it is not simply because they are sweating more. Their skin chemistry is changing too. What Do Androgens Have to Do With It? Androgens are a group of hormones that includes testosterone and several related hormones. During puberty, increasing androgen activity contributes to the development of apocrine and sebaceous glands. It also changes the skin environment and the types of substances present on the skin. This can ultimately affect body odour. It would be misleading, though, to say that testosterone itself makes someone smell a certain way. The final scent depends on what the glands release, which bacteria are present on the skin, genetics and many other factors. Hormones are part of the process, not the whole process. Why Does Stress Sometimes Make You Smell Different? This is something many people have experienced. You might spend an hour exercising and not notice much body odour, but after a stressful presentation or difficult day, your underarms can seem noticeably different. Stress activates the body's nervous-system response and can increase sweating, particularly around areas such as the underarms. Research has found that stress-induced sweating can be accompanied by stronger perceived axillary malodour. Part of the reason is the type and location of sweating. The underarm contains both sweat glands and apocrine glands, creating an environment where skin bacteria can interact with glandular secretions and produce odorous compounds. So that familiar "stress smell" is not just in your head. Your Skin Bacteria Help Create the Final Scent Here is where things get especially interesting. Your skin has its own community of microorganisms, often referred to as the skin microbiome. These bacteria can break down substances released from sweat and apocrine glands and turn them into volatile compounds that contribute to body odour. Research has identified sulfur-containing molecules and other compounds among important contributors to underarm odour. This means two people can have very different natural body scents even if they sweat a similar amount. Their skin bacteria may not be exactly the same. Their genetics may be different. Their gland secretions may be different. And their hormone levels and responses may also differ. Your Genes Matter Too One of the best examples is a gene called ABCC11. A particular variant of this gene is associated with substantially lower levels of some of the precursors involved in typical underarm odour. People carrying two copies of this variant tend to have much lower levels of characteristic axillary odour, although they can still produce other odorous compounds. So if you have ever wondered why some people seem to have naturally stronger body odour than others, hormones are only one possible explanation. Genetics can make a difference too. Does Hormonal Change Mean Your Natural Scent Will Always Change? Not necessarily. Hormones are one factor in a much larger system. Your natural body scent can also be influenced by: Temperature and how much you sweat Skin oils Skin bacteria Genetics Exercise Diet and lifestyle Clothing Personal hygiene Changes in the skin itself That is why your body scent can change without any major hormonal event. It is also why there is no single formula for what a person's "natural smell" should be. So, Can You Actually Smell Your Hormones? Not in the way people often imagine. Hormones such as testosterone, oestrogen and progesterone do not simply evaporate from your skin and announce themselves as a particular scent. Instead, hormones can influence the biological processes that produce and modify body odour. Think of it like changing the conditions in a kitchen. The conditions affect what ingredients are used, how they react and what the final result becomes. Hormones are one of the factors that can change those conditions on your skin. Why This Matters for Fragrance Your natural body scent is also part of how you experience fragrance. A perfume or body fragrance does not exist in isolation once it is applied to skin. It mixes with your skin's natural oils, moisture and existing odour compounds. Skin temperature and the surrounding environment also affect how fragrance molecules evaporate. That is why the same fragrance can smell slightly different on different people. The fragrance has not necessarily changed. The environment around it has. Your Natural Scent Is More Personal Than You Think Body odour is often treated as something very simple: sweat goes bad and starts to smell. The science tells a more interesting story. Hormones can influence gland activity. Glands release substances onto the skin. Skin bacteria transform some of those substances into volatile compounds. Genetics help determine which compounds are produced in the first place. Temperature, stress and other everyday factors can influence the process further. All of these things come together to create your natural body scent. So your scent is not determined by one hormone, one gland or even one type of bacteria. It is the result of your body's chemistry interacting with your skin and the microscopic ecosystem living on it. And that is exactly what makes human scent so individual.
