The Spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi

The Spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi this, Ganesh Chaturthi that…but why?

Come with me for a sec. Step onto the streets. Drums are thumping, flowers everywhere, lights twinkling, and somehow, you’re surrounded by hundreds of people all shouting “Ganpati Bappa…” and before you know it, your heart screams back “Morya!” without even asking. Can you feel it? That’s Bappa taking over.

For 10 days, the city transforms. Streets are alive, homes are glowing, the smell of modaks, coconut, and incense floats in the air and suddenly, we’re all caught in it together, sharing this massive wave of excitement, devotion, and pure joy.

The One and Only Ganesha

Elephant head, kind eyes, and a little mouse at his feet- cute enough to make you smile and wise enough to guide every step.

And we? We’re part of that magic. We feel the devotion, the excitement, the hope all wrapped up in one playful energy.

No wonder so many of us grew up watching My Friend Ganesha and actually believing he could walk into our lives like the best buddy ever. And let’s be honest, the real plot twist? When we all found out that Ashu- the kid in the movie was actually a girl in real life.

The Story of His Birth

Here’s the tale: Parvati, wanting a guardian while she bathed, creates a boy from turmeric paste. Breathes life into him, asks him to guard the door  absolutely no one allowed in.

Shiva returns, doesn’t recognize the boy, and strikes him down. Parvati is heartbroken. Shiva, realizing his mistake, sends his followers to find the first head they see which turns out to be an Elephant head. And just like that, Ganesha is reborn wise, joyful, mischievous, and ready to win hearts forever.

It’s drama, love, and divine magic rolled into one. And as we celebrate him, we’re stepping into that story ourselves.

Why This Festival Feels So Huge

Pandals glowing, music thumping, laughter everywhere. Families decorating, kids running with sweets, everyone chanting, sharing, celebrating.

  • The Arrival: Idols of Bappa brought home or placed in pandals, everyone watching, cameras clicking, music blaring.

  • Daily Celebrations: We offer prayers, flowers, coconuts, and Bappa’s absolute favorite- modaks. The air fills with fragrant smoke from dhoop cones and the soft glow of a dhuni, little charms like a nimbu-mirchi guarding the doors. We taste the sweetness, smell the incense, and hear the chants together.

  • Grand Goodbye: On the final day, we join the visarjan. It’s loud, it’s emotional, it’s beautiful.

Facts you need to know

🥛 The Day Bappa Drank Milk
Imagine this: 1995, across India (and even abroad), devotees offer milk to Ganesha idols… and they actually “drink” it! Scientists later explained it as capillary action which is a physics phenomenon in which liquid travels through narrow spaces without the help of gravity.

📖 Ganesha Wrote the Mahabharata
We all know Bappa loves modaks, but did you know he also penned the Mahabharata? Ved Vyasa narrated, and Ganesha scribbled it down and so fast, he even snapped his tusk mid-way to keep up.

🙈 Trunkless Ganesha
Head to Jaipur’s Garh Ganesh Temple, and you’ll meet a one-of-a-kind Ganesha who is completely trunkless! Devotees climb 365 steps (one for every day of the year) just to seek his blessings.

A Farewell like no other

Finally, the last day. We’re all there together, standing by the water, watching the immersion. Streets echo with “Ganpati Bappa Morya! Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!”, but there’s also that bittersweet ache, waving goodbye to the God who brought so much joy into our homes, hearts, and streets.

And yet… that promise is there. He’ll return next year. Fresh hope, new beginnings, same magic. And we’ll be here, shouting, laughing, celebrating together, again.

✨ Ganpati Bappa Morya! ✨
